Oh socks….if only I could write an ode to just how much I have fallen in love with sock knitting. I’ve only knit three pairs in my knitting lifetime – all since October of last year. Still, there is something mesmerizing and just plain zen about knitting socks. I liked Knitting Sarah’s KAL idea so much I started last night!
I finished my third pair of socks in a white heat around 4am. The pattern is a weird mishmash of all sorts of free patterns I have found online and Clara Parkes’ The Knitter’s Book of Socks. They are almost perfect – they need to be about two rounds longer in the foot and four stitches shorter in the cuff and we’ll be good to go. I think that Patons sock yarn (this is Patons Jacquards in Aqua Jacquard) is a really nice yarn for the price as well. I love these socks….I want them to come out of the dryer before I go to work….here’s hoping.
And since I like to use photos to tell a story of knitting goodness – here is my pair of socks photogenic journey!
- First sok on DPNs.
- Sock 1 of 2.
- Magic Loop? Who, Me?
- Just in case I couldn’t turn the heel with magic loop…
- I turned the heel!
- They are almost perfect!
I feel a bit selfish knitting socks, because I am knitting socks for myself. I love my for my Etsy store and I love knitting for people – but sometimes working for hours and hours on something you hope someone will love can a little discouraging. When I am making socks I am tailoring them to fit me like a ….glove?…..sock glove?….I am knitting them to fit me. I don’t have to worry about the color, I picked the color – of course I love it! I don’t have to worry if there is a little snag because Max kneaded it – I can fix it and I am the only one wearing them. And of course the biggie….they’re mine 😉
Well, time for work friends and neighbors. Thank you so much for the KAL advice. Go see Knitting Sarah’s KAL page, it is very low-key and such a wonderful idea. Cannot wait to get back to you with some finished goodies! HAPPY JANUARY 2nd!
Sometimes we have to make something just for ourselves. After all, we have to say we would wear our own work don’t we?
Plus don’t forget it is good advertising!
This is very true – I keep finding myself hiking up my pants in public to show off my socks 😉 I need a pair of see-through shoes….or laser hair removal so I don’t have to shave everyday!
Did you seriously knit those in one night? OMG i’m so jealous. I’m going to do the KAL too, but I think I’ll be lucky to get through one sock a month…
I finished the sock after the heel turn last night, not the whole sock 🙂
that’s still pretty impressive!
Aww shucks 😉
Love those socks – and it ISN’T selfish. 🙂
I’ll be doing that KAl too, I loved the low key nature. Already picked my yarn out but haven’t started yet, I have a couple of things going that I need to finish or make more progress on.
I feel your pain – I am setting a timer on my sock knitting until I make a dent in what I’ve got going on 😉
So glad you’re doing this KAL! Are you on Instagram?
not instagram, but ravelry and here, and accasionally drop by Facebook.
Yay for joining the sock knitting bandwagon.I love knitting socks and I am so happy when someone else feels the same way. Those are some seriously gorgeous socks and I am so happy you were able to do something for yourself. Congrats on realizing the mods you need to make already (don’t ask me how many pairs there were before I connected those dots.) Anyway once again great job and keep up the great work!
Thank you! OCD can come in handy sometimes I suppose – like with fit! 😉
Socks are the bomb! Only the people I really love get socks knitted by me, because they are so personal. They can be tricky or awesome and zen, I just really love the kind of blank canvas that they are. Yay socks!
Yay socks! I am knitting a pair for the hubby and for my dad – both of which quite literally begged for them. Now, this was before they had to keep sliding there legs into partially knitted items again, and again, and again….maybe they’ll (m dad) will tire of it and then I won’t have to do it again.
Then I can just knit socks for myself! *Insert evil cackling here* 😉
Loving the socks! I’m working on my first pair but finding it painfully slow. I so want to love knitting socks!
I’m joining the KAL too to give me a push.
My first pair took 2 months? My second pair took a month, my third pair took 2 weeks and I started a sock on the first and I’m already on the instep.
Basically, socks are my new knitting crack! Just be patient, the rhythm comes, I promise! 😉
You are so right. It’s getting faster!
*Clapping!!*
I can understand how you feel about socks having ventured into the sock world last year. Wear them with pride. X
Oh, I do! I have to remember to shave my legs every day because I keep hiking my pant legs up to show them off!
Lol – great image of you in my head with rolled up trousers!!
Beautiful! Socks are one of my favorite things to knit!! I’m glad you have found the love in knitting them! LOL They always come in handy!!
It was -4 degrees last night – my knit socks are my new greatest love….just don’t tell my husband or my niece 😉
I’m going to put socks on my 12 new experiences list. I’ve always thought they were too hard to do, but if you don’t try…..you don’t get cosy feet?!
YouTube is your friend – I know you can do it! Just take your time and you’ll surly fall in love 😉
So glad you are joining in! And I LOVE the energy you bring! I, too, am beyond excited to work on some socks for myself… although my husband has pretty high expectations for scoring a few pairs, too!
My hubby and my dad are both heavily hinting for socks as well! Are you using a hashtag for Instagram/twitter? I’ve linked my socks to you on your Ravelry page and I’m almost ready to turn the heel on my first sock!
Your KAL is such a great idea!
We are going with #sockswithsarah for everything.
Thank you! I think it’s going to be a blast & looks like we’ll have a great bunch of knitters sharing — yay!
*CLAPPING!!* 🙂
BTW, did I say thanks for sharing on your blog? There has been a whirlwind of activity around here the last couple days, so if I didn’t say it, THANK YOU!
No thanks is necessary – you had an excellent idea (which I love) and I wanted to share! 🙂
Awwww! How do I make a slightly embarrassed yet flattered emoticon? LOL!
I’m not real sure…How do you make a happy, devilish face? Because having a real excuse to knit on socks everyday makes me so happy!? I’ve got all my links set up – good luck with your year!
Yay! Good luck with your year, too! I expect to see lots of awesome pictures up & stories on your blog.
